In India, the most common dental treatment is getting an implant. And the most legitimate and frequently asked question after an implant is that the implant is fitted with a crown immediately. Most worried patients are those who have lost a tooth in visible smile line or esthetic zone. Though every dentist will try to explain it to you in best possible way, but fact of the matter is that there is no yes or no answer to your query. The original broken tooth is extracted, a dental implant is placed. Now what? Is the crown is connected to implant instantly or after healing of extraction site.
When the crown is to be connected at a later stage, we attain a better bone quality and quantity. This way, we get the perfect initial stabilization of implant. The reason for this is that the place from where the tooth is extracted is perfectly healed now. However, if the crown is to be connected to the implant immediately, there is always an inconsistency between the tooth socket and geometry of the implant. Hence poor implant stability and need for grafting arises.
So, the treatment depends from patient to patient. If the patient does not have grinding and clenching habits and the implant is stable when it is placed, there is no harm in going for immediate crowning or temporary crowning of the implant. However, if the implant is not stable at the time of placement, we can give it little time and the crown can be placed at a later stage. So, it all depends upon patient’s condition and dentist’s judgement of the situation.
